Hi Frenchis,
Exhaust popping or backfiring is caused by a rich idle mixture and air sucked into the exhaust from a hole or leakage, which shouldn't exist, e.g. a gap between cylinder head and exhaust.

The valve clearance shouldn't be the problem.
As long as exhaust popping just happens sometimes it's not harmful.
