Midrange coughing 7 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
I recently purchased a 1984 XR1000. It seems to be lean, in the midrange area..coughs or spits. I purchased it from the original owner, and he said it does this occasionally. It seems to be worse when the engine is cold. It improves, but does not go away, after warm-up. Full throttle is OK, and idle is OK...though I think it could be improved. I have yet to check for an intake manifold leak, since nothing has been changed on the motorcycle, for 20 years. It has 7600 miles on the engine. The previous owner sync'd the carbs for me, but has never adjusted the idle mixture. Is the factory procedure available for setting up the idle mixture? Is there a midrange adjustment? This is kind of a must, since as an engine wears, it's characteristics change. Also, is there a source for purchasing the cleaning fluid for the K-N air cleaners. The previous owner has never cleaned them, but I would think this would only make the fuel/air richer.

Any help is appreciated...Thanks, Gary
